How Many Versions of Airpods Are There?
AirPods were introduced in December 2016. They were then refreshed in March 2019. There are now two versions of the AirPods, the original AirPods as well as the second-generation AirPods. Both versions are known as “AirPods,” but there are notable differences.
AirPods 2 (second-generation) have an H1 chip in place of W1 chips. The AirPods can switch between devices twice as fast and connect to a call 1.5x faster with the H1.
The new AirPods offer three hours of talk time and the same battery life as the older models. AirPods 1 & 2 are identical, so there won’t be any differences in design.
AirPods 2 has hands-free “Hey Siri,” allowing you to summon Apple’s assistant by tapping. The new AirPods also come with an optional Wireless Charging Case, which can be used with any Qi wireless charging mat.

AirPods 2 and 3 have the same battery life. This is approximately 24 hours of listening time if the AirPods are fully charged inside the charging case. The AirPods 2 have a slightly longer talk time, about three hours instead of two hours.

The AirPods do not have a power switch. They are equipped with optical and accelerometer sensors and know when they have been inserted into your ear. This means that they can start working as soon as they are inserted. They will also automatically pause the audio when you take them out.
The way your AirPods function varies depending on which model you have.
All AirPod models: Accept and terminate phone calls by double-tapping an earbud.
Original AirPods: To wake Siri, double-tap one earbud. Siri can control audio; ask Siri for tasks such as PLAY, PAUSE, LOWER VOLUME, or “go back to the previous song.“
AirPods 2: Double-tap an earbud and skip tracks. Siri can be woken by saying, “Hey Siri.” You can also adjust AirPods settings to make double taps perform other functions.
