How to Make a Virtual Reality Headset
What You Will Need
1. VR headset cardboard template
2. Shoe box or pizza box
5. Syringe or plastic straw
6. Plastic bottle
7. Xacto knife
8. Glue gun or epoxy
9. Rubber band (a head strap)
How it Works
This tutorial will show you how to make the DIY lens for your DIY Google Virtual Reality. The printable templates will be helpful later when you make the cardboard enclosure.
These VR headsets have a lens that reduces the least distance between the user and the object. This allows you to see your smartphone’s screen from only a few centimeters.
Making a Biconvex Lens for a DIY Google Cardboard VR Headset
Get start with the homemade lens and then move on to the Google Cardboard VR headset enclosure. You can skip Step 2 if you have already built the DIY Google Cardboard lens. These are the steps:
Step 1. You will need a clear, empty bottle that has a good “Curvature” such as this.
Step 2. Next, create a 25mm-wide circumference sides template on a piece of paper/cardboard.
Step 3. Use the circular template to cut the circular pieces out of the plastic bottle with scissors. You will need at least four parts of this to make an easily available convex lens.
Step 4. To create the single biconvex lens, combine two pieces of clear plastic.
Step 5. Use quick-dry glue to seal the edges of the biconvex plastic that you have just joined.
Step 6. Then, fill the syringe up with clear water. Next, carefully inject it into the biconvex shape.
To remove large bubbles, gently pinch the lens and squeeze it to remove them.
Step 7. Once you have removed all bubbles, fill the container with water and seal it. Use the needle of the syringe to close the opening you made.
Step 8. Allow it to dry for a few moments. Check if your own lenses can magnify objects. You can also try it with printed letters and small things.
Step 9. Repeat the process for your second lens and final lens.
Congratulations if you managed to build your pair of lenses successfully! Now you can start building your own VR headset.
NOTE: Keep in mind that the magnifier’s magnification power decreases as the lens size increases. The magnifier’s magnification power increases as the magnifier’s lens size decreases.
This is due to the curvature of the magnifier’s lens. It depends on the curvature of the magnifier lens. The lens’ magnification power is lower as the lens gets larger.
This happens because the amount of curvature within the lens shrinks with increasing lens size. The lens’ magnification power is higher when the focal length of the lens decreases.
This happens because the amount of curvature within the lens increases. This is why Google Cardboard VR lenses with higher magnification are usually smaller than those with lower magnification.
Making an Enclosure for our DIY Google Cardboard VR Headsets
Step 1. You can download the template for your headset on the internet.
Step 2. Print the template.
Step 3. Attach the template to your shoebox or pizza.
Step 4. Use the Xacto knife to cut the template.
Attaching the Lens to the DIY Google Cardboard VR Headset
The pair of lenses you have made earlier can be placed in the eye slot on the assembled Google Cardboard Headset. To secure the Google VR, you can use the spaces in the cardboard enclosure.
Testing the Google Cardboard App
We can now test some VR apps on our smartphones. Depending on the smartphone you use (Android/iOS), download the VR app of your choice or the stock Google Cardboard application and then load it onto your phone. Use Magnets with Caution: Messing around with magnets close to your smartphone could cause the sensor’s calibration to be altered!
We tried a variety of powerful magnets close to the phone. Although the compass can re-calibrate itself, it can also be messed up. It seems like we may have magnetized a component within the phone in our case.
The compass works reasonably well, but it doesn’t have the same field strength when the phone is turned in different directions. An iPhone has a few stainless steel shields that passing magnets may have slightly magnetized. They should eventually demagnetize.
Avoid putting powerful magnets too close on your smartphone. Or you could end up with faulty compass calibration.
