Pros & Cons
- Booming cinematic sound
- Stereo sound-stage with a wide range
- Google Assistant built-in
- Chromecast built-in
- Moderately priced
- Only a limited height presence
- Mobile apps are terrible
- There are no surrounding units
The LG SN8YG joins the trend of manufacturers creating easy-to-use soundbars. What does LG have to offer that is different from other rival bars made by Sony, Vizio, and Samsung?
The key factors are LG’s integration of Google Assistant voice commands directly into its soundbar and LG’s partnership with Meridian Audio to tune the SN8YG. The new LG soundbar has several features, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, Hi-Res Audio, and AI Room Calibration. This should help it to be ahead of its competitors.
Remember that this soundbar doesn’t support Dolby Atmos, but it may still work with other discrete systems.
Although the SN8YG’s flaws and high price can make it challenging to buy, those who want cinematic sound with a broad soundstage and enhanced midrange will be satisfied by the LG SN8YG3.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar.
Price and Release Date
The LG SN8YG was introduced at CES 2020 before being fully rolled out in June/July. The price is $799.99, around PS600 or AU$1,100. However, most retailers have marked it down to $649.99.
How does it compare to other soundbars?
The SN8YG costs are significantly more than the $179 Vizio V-Series 2.1 Soundbar, which is $200. However, compared to similar-specced soundbars with Dolby Atmos capability, such as the Sony HT–G700 or Samsung HW–Q70T, the SN8YG is about the same price.
One exception to this rule?
The Vizio 36′ 5.1.2 Home Theater Sound System includes Dolby Atmos and costs only $499. It also comes with two surround sound units. It’s an affordable option for US AV enthusiasts that offers many of the same features and drawbacks.
The LG SN8YG soundbar is sleek and slim to be placed underneath most TVs. Although the sub is a little more conspicuous in the living area, it’s not the most inconvenient or most enormous subwoofers that we’ve ever seen.
The top is brushed aluminum and features a row touch-capacitive playback controls, two plastic grilles for up-firing speakers, and the front drivers are contained in a separate plastic grille.
Dimensions for the soundbar are 2.2 x 41.7×4.7 inches (LxWxD) and for the wireless subwoofer 15.4x 8.7×12.3 inches.
The soundbar has three drivers, one for each channel, but the SN8YG adds two top-firing speakers to the mix. However, they aren’t very loud if you listen to standard stereo content or surround sound content.
The soundbar has a single HDMI-Input and one HDMI-Output (ARC/eARC disabled) and optical digital audio, USB, and optical digital audio. Although it would be nice to have more HDMI-Ins, the options available are sufficient.
The soundbar ships with a basic plastic remote. However, it is functional and reliable.
The SN8YG’s design is quite disappointing. There is just the bar and sub. The 2.0 center Channel Rear Speaker Kit (LGSPK8-S 2.0) can be added to surround sound speakers for an additional $149.
The LG SN8YG has many features, but finding those tied with LG’s complicated Wi-Fi Speaker app can be challenging.
Integration of Bluetooth and Chromecast are two of the most straightforward. The latter can be used immediately after it is linked to your Google Home app account. You can also summon built-in Google Assistant from the soundbar, which is helpful if you don’t have an Activate Google Assistant speaker.
The LG Wi-Fi speaker app, which is required to calibrate the AI Room Calibration Tool, is more difficult to use. You’ll need to set the soundbar to Wi-Fi mode, then launch the app from your mobile device. It took us about a week to get it set up correctly (the app said there were no Bluetooth speakers connected), and then we could try the AI Room Calibration tool.
You can adjust the soundbar’s tuning from the default AI Sound Pro setting to any presets. If you have trouble finding the perfect volume level for quiet or loud scenes, you can also turn on auto volume leveling.
The issue with the app is its age. It feels outdated compared to other apps, such as the Sonos app. And unlike the soundbar, which works 100% of the time, it doesn’t always work.
Extra Features and Service
Let’s see what additional functions and features are in this one. It seems like the SN8YG doesn’t differ from the SN9YG, so that we will review the same features as before.
The supported audio formats are first. The soundbar supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. These two options allow us to keep all older backward-compatible formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS: HD Master Audio and even the more spartan Dolby Digital or DTS tracks. An HDMI connection is required for anything other than Dolby Digital and DTS. An optical digital audio cable may suffice.
LG soundbars include many sound modes, which we like. Even though some sound modes aren’t as good, they still offer flexibility. The SN8YG has six sound modes, including the Dolby Atmos or DTS:X modes. These modes are automatically locked when the signal is detected.
You can choose between Bass Blast or Bass Blast+ modes to enhance the lower frequencies. The Standard method uses Meridian audio technologies It seems to be the most balanced and best for all situations. The Movie sound mode prioritizes surround sound effects and music that has adjusted its sound to provide better quality.
Last but not least, we have AI Sound Pro mode. This uses Adaptive Sound Control to analyze and optimize the audio quality for each content. If you don’t want the hassle of calibrating options, AI Sound Pro is another option.
If you’re a late-night watcher, the Night mode (also known as Night Time here) can lower the sound intensity and increase the fineness and softness to make it easier for late-night viewing.
We’ve already talked about sound modes, but we couldn’t stop there without mentioning Meridian. They offer their tech expertise to LG soundbars for an additional year by providing their digital signal processing technology. The SN8YG supports High-Resolution Audio. It can playback high-quality files at 24bit/192kHz.
The AI room calibration is another feature found on all higher-tier LG soundbars. This system uses spatial awareness technology to determine the acoustics of your room and adjust the soundbar settings accordingly. This big sound system is not as feature-rich or advanced as in AV receivers, but it offers one over many lower and middle-tier options that rely on manual tuning. You can use the Wi-Fi speaker app for iOS and Android to calibrate your AI room.
The soundbar supports both Bluetooth streaming and USB. Bluetooth can stream High-Resolution Audio at 24 bits/192kHz. For audio purists, you can playback FLAC or WAV files.
However, local streaming is just one option. Chromecast allows you to stream audio from multiple online streaming services. For this, you will need the Chromecast application. However, it can be found in both Google and Apple stores.
The soundbar is a 3.1.2 channel unit but can be increased to 5.1.2 by adding the optional wireless rear speakers kit (SPK8S). This is an excellent option from LG. Many may not have enough space for surround speakers, which would limit the market that this product would be able to serve. The downside is that it can be more expensive if you decide to purchase it.
Even though we have taken a step back from the SN9YG, there are still many features and functionality. The SN8YG is still a soundbar with all the features.
Some soundbars have a lot of basses and are heavy high-end. The SN8YG is a soundbar that focuses on vocals and makes it easier to hear the dialogue. The wireless subwoofer with the soundbar adds a cinematic dimension to the mix, making action sequences more dynamic.
We watched Season 2 on Netflix’s Umbrella Academy in August to put the soundbar to the testing. We enjoyed the SN8YG’s robust bass response and transparent dialogue.
We liked that the soundbar has a large soundstage and a wide sweet spot that allow you to be anywhere in the room while still getting good stereo sound.
We are referring to stereo sound because surround sound can be a bit disappointing, especially when compared against accurate 5.1.2 or 5.1 systems. Although you will still hear left-right separation, a stereo sweep will reveal that the back-left or back-right channels don’t sound convincing.
This is especially true when you’re watching something in Dolby atmos. Netflix had a few nature documentaries that we could manage with Atmos-enabled. While we could hear some of the overhead sound effects, they didn’t have the same clarity and depth as other systems.
Stream some music from any Chromecast-compatible service or via Bluetooth, and you’ll find that the SN8YG is a surprisingly musical system. Subwoofers help increase the volume of orchestral music and give it a more dynamic feel. Traditional rock and rap are made stronger by emphasizing the mid-range vocals.
Lastly, if your Hi-Res Audio sources include a compatible Bluray player or AVR, the SN8YG can provide Hi-Res Audio playback support. This makes your play music collection even more enjoyable.
Should you buy the LG SN8YG 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos Soundbar?
It’s a good deal if…
The built-in sound system on your TV is not enough
The SN8YG soundbar is a solid, rock-solid unit that radically improves mid-range audio. It can also boost vocal clarity and make it easy to have clear conversations. It amplifies bass sounds, grooves, and other percussive sounds and adds low-end bass to add extra punch to vehicle chases, explosions, and vehicle chases.
Dolby Atmos is a unibody speaker.
Some people don’t like clutter and want the best, most cable-free solution. The SN8YG is the perfect solution for those people. It’s wireless and has no cables, except the HDMI input cable that the LG soundbar can connect to your TV and the two power cables that plug into walls. It’s Dolby Atmos in one box.
You want Google Assistant in your living room
The SN8YG is an excellent option for adding an Activate Google Assistant speaker to your living room. It takes only seconds to connect the speaker to Google Home, and you can use it as Chromecast Audio.
Don’t buy it if…
Non-functional apps can make it challenging to be productive
It was frustrating to get the LG Wi-Fi speaker to locate the soundbar. It had a 1.6-star rating with more than 100 reviews on the Apple App Store at publication. Many users complain about connectivity issues.
Dolby Atmos is what you want.
Dolby Atmos soundbars face the greatest challenge of recreating height channels with half the power of a traditional bookshelf speaker. It results in a weak upfiring sound, which doesn’t do justice to cinematic Dolby Atmos mixes.
You want the best soundbar available.
The SN8YG’s new discounted price isn’t affordable for many people. This soundbar will cost more than your LG TV for most people. Vizio offers a variety of soundbars with similar features that are $150 cheaper. If you want to save money, you can also get rid of Atmos and save hundreds.
Is LG SN8YG equipped with eARC?
The LG SN8YG is equipped with an HDMI 2.0 input and a TV’s HDMI-ARC port with eARC Support. There’s also an optical (Toslink), an HDMI Type-A port, and a USB Type-A port to read audio files from the USB port.
How can I pair my LG S8YG with my LG G6YG?
The wireless subwoofer’s rear will prompt you to pair. *The rear green LED of the wireless subwoofer blinks rapidly. (If the green LED doesn’t blink, press and. Hold the Pairing.
Turn on the soundbar. The pairing is complete. The wireless subwoofer’s rear LED turns green.
