The Setup Process
Although the Polkaudio T50 can be used with banana plugs, we connected them to our Emotiva A-100 using speaker wire. This amp is excellent for sensitive speakers and makes it compatible with other types of banana plugs.
A great speaker amplifier is required for passive speakers, such as the Polk T50. After you’ve found a suitable speaker amplifier, connect it with the speaker wire.
Ensure that the cables are connected positively to negative and negative to neutral (black is negative). Because of their high 90dB/W sensitivity, the Polk T50s make an excellent choice for beginners. This allows you to save big on peripherals and get a more powerful amplifier.

Polk Audio T50 Speakers Review: Design and Features
The Polk speaker is a beautiful model. The medium-density fiberboard cabinet of the T50 tower is covered in an attractive black grain, wood black vinyl, and a removable, black cloth grille that protects drivers.
The floor-standing speaker features a tiny flat pedestal base and an overall fit-and-finish above average for its price. It doesn’t appear to be an entry-level model.
The T50 tower is small in comparison to other buildings. It measures 36.25 inches tall, 7.75 inches wide, and 8.75 inches deep.
The T50 is a bass-reflex, two-way design that features a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and a 6.5-inch composite midrange/woofer. It also has two 6.5 inch bass radiators. (Bass radiators are passive audio products, so the power amplifiers of your Denon receiver do not drive them).
Bass radiators can replace bass ports because they are closed boxes. Therefore, bass radiators don’t make any audible “chuffing.” They offer more placement options than ported speakers, and they are also easier to place in a room.
The T50’s rear has one set of five-way binding posts. These can be used with speaker cables that have been terminated with banana plugs, spades pins, or stripped-bare-wire ends. The T50 comes with a 5-year warranty.
The T Series includes the T30 center channel speaker and the T15 surround/bookshelf speakers for home theater enthusiasts who want an actual 5.1-channel experience. Polk offers several compatible subwoofers, the PSW10 or PSW111 being two of them.
Polk Audio T50 Floorspeaker Review: Sound Quality
Here is where the T50 shines. The T50 was only tested in mono, so we can’t speak for the stereo performance. However, based on listening and analysis, we believe it would perform well.
It sounds excellent with rock out of the box. Remarkably, the T50 has such a neutral sound signature. This is a big deal considering you would typically have to search for studio monitors to achieve this sound.
It’s step response is immaculate, which contributes to a fast, stable bass response. Its impulse response is also excellent, with very little to no ring, giving the speaker great separation. The film soundtrack is clear and distinct, with dialogue sounding clear and precise.
The T50 tower speakers could use a little more crunch in their lower mids. However, it is not a lot enough to negate the T50’s ridiculously low distortion. It is very audible at moderate volumes, and distortion never exceeds one to two percent.
It is rare to find speakers that are so cheap and have such a controlled treble and bass. We must give Polk credit for finding a way to make this happen on a tight budget. The T50 tower speakers have excellent instrument separation, resulting in a lively and pretty amazing sound stage when combined with a pair.
The Polk T50’s design is where it falls short. It’s still a budget speaker, no matter how tuned they might be. They cannot provide subtle details like a guitarist moving their hand across a fretboard or a singer taking an inhale. These details may seem small but are essential to audio and hi-fi.
However, you can still pick out riffs, notes, and basslines with these tower speakers. Their detail is comparable to studio monitors of the same price. Tower speakers will provide better sound quality, but you’ll need to pay twice as much.

Polk T50 Bookshelf Review: Internal Components
One-inch silk dome tweeter sits above a single, 6.5-inch composite cone woofer. The driver array appears to have two additional drivers that are identical to the one below. These passive radiators are tuned for bass performance and can be used to increase the response.
These ports are used in place of the rear-firing bass ports, giving the T50 an aggressive look. Except for a set of 5-way binding posts, the rear is entirely bare.
A tower speaker cable can be made with bare wire and any other material that terminates in the banana connector, pins, spades, or spades. These tower speakers require external amplifiers if it is not apparent.
Polk Audio T50 Series Review: Audio Performance
Polk Audio also offers complimentary speakers that can be used with the T50 to create a surround sound system. The speakers were tested with the Cambridge Audio AXR100 amplifier. This is one of the most expensive amps you can purchase for less than $500.
The Polk Audio T50 tower speakers shine in this area. You will immediately notice how balanced they sound. The frequency ranges have plenty of room to move, creating a neutral sound profile. This is the type of profile that you would get from studio monitor speakers.
Polk T50 Speaker Review: Bass Response
The volume is apparent, concise, and free from distortion even when you increase the volume. Two Passive radiators are excellent at elevating the low-end without making it too loud. The passive radiators are fantastic to find such control in so few speakers.
You can also find the same refinement in the mids or trebles. They offer impressive levels of separation and precision. This is especially evident when you play louder and more complex jazz or classical music. Each instrument can be heard within its own space, creating an exciting sound stage.
Polk Speakers Reviews: Music and Movies
This accuracy extends to movie watching. The dialogue is clear and concise. The rest of the soundtrack doesn’t overpower it. The bass response is powerful enough to create some explosive effects and rumbles.
Polk Audio T50 speakers are a great alternative to soundbars if you need a 5.1 system. Polk Audio T50 speakers will save you money and provide excellent sound for music playback.
Although I could not test the T50 and Polk Audio PSW108 subwoofers, it would certainly add some great sound. This could be the addition that convinces bass-heads of the T50’s value.
T50 Polk Review: Price
The Polk T50 is available individually for $150. Even at that price, they’re a great value often available for as low as $80. It almost feels like theft when they are this cheap.
Although the Polk T50 budget speakers sound great, they are solid and can be easily replaced if necessary. These tower speakers are the best speakers for budget-minded users who want great sound.
Competition: Punches above your weight
ELAC Debut 2.0 F5.2 Tower speaker: At $500 per pair, the ELACs can be a bit more expensive. The ELACs outperform the T50s in sound and have better drivers and build quality. But they sound much better. If you’re looking for extra detail, the Polk T50 drivers are not the right choice.
JBL LSR305 Bookshelf speaker: Although the LSR305s have been discontinued, their successor, the MK II, is still available. They’re the same speaker but with a different coating.
They retail for $200 per pair and are great studio monitors that perform better than their size. They are about the same sound as the T50s, but the JBLs can take a beating and still hum along.
The T50s are tower speakers. However, if space is an issue, the LSR305s might be better speakers. The LSR305s are great speakers, so no need to purchase an amplifier.
