Design

Aside from one glaring flaw, the Kraken X is the most beautiful headset Razer has ever made. The Kraken X is much more traditional than the ManO’War or older Kraken designs.

The headphone is 7.5 inches by 6.5 inches in size and weighs 8.8 ounces. The headphone comes with a black plastic chassis and subtle honeycomb patterns on the ear cushions. The top features a padded headband and adjustable notches on the sides. It’s simple and elegant, with no fuss.

Next, you’ll find the left earcup, which houses most of the additional features. The left ear cup has a mic-mute toggle and volume wheel.

Both are good, but the volume dial is smaller and lower than I would like. The boom mic is where the biggest problem with the headphone rears its ugly head.

A retractable microphone or removable mic is a common feature in high-end headsets. The boom mic is often found in low-end headsets. They can be slid up or out of your sight when not in use.

The Kraken X’s flexible mic doesn’t slide up, retract or come off. The Kraken X’s flexible mic will be visible in your peripheral vision every time you use it.

It can be distracting and annoying, so make sure you fold it in a specific way. Razer chose the most intuitive solution to the mic dilemma out of all possible options.

The Kraken X’s versatility is beyond doubt. It connects to all devices via one 3.5mm headphone jack. The headphone comes with a splitter if you prefer to separate audio and mic inputs for your gaming desktop.

The reach of the default cable is relatively short. However, with the splitter cable, the space is significantly longer. Each audio cable is 4.3 feet long. Gauge your distance requirements accordingly.

Comfort Razer Kraken X

Comfort

The Kraken X gaming headsets are a comfortable and lightweight option due to its size, weight, and ear pads. Even if you are wearing glasses, the padded leatherette ear cups and headbands press down gently. It’s easy to seal your ears.

One of my coworkers also tried the Kraken X and was completely satisfied with my assessment. The headphones were extremely comfortable, and he could wear them for the majority of his workday without having to take them off.

Features

The Kraken X connects via a 3.5mm headphone jack instead of a USB. There isn’t much software functionality. The new Kraken X allows you to access Razer’s surround-sound software.

This software can be used to enable digital 7.1 surround audio. Although it is easy to set up, installing separate software for Razer Synapse (which controls all Razer peripherals) is quite cumbersome. In my testing, I didn’t notice any difference in surround or stereo performance.

This leaves the microphone unaffected, which is okay but not great. It recorded my voice very clearly with minimal feedback and fuzz.

The background noise was loud and clear, even from conversations between coworkers across the row. It’s okay for casual multiplayer, but it is not reliable enough to be trusted beyond that.

Audio Quality

Razer Kraken X gaming headphone isn’t necessarily the most expensive. You’ll have to make some compromises. Although the audio quality is excellent, it’s nothing to brag about.

You can crank the volume up to a high decibel while still maintaining a high-level detail. The headphone sounded amazing with Sean Bean’s purring monologues and Civilization VI’s inspiring soundtrack. This headset is capable of handling dialogue and soundtracks.

Apex Legends was a game I played recently, and I noticed that the explosions and gunfire lacked depth. They also sounded hollower than other gaming headsets.

It felt like I was missing something by having sub-par bass. Those who desire a blockbuster audio experience should look elsewhere.

The Kraken X has 7.1 surround sound to compensate. This allows you to pinpoint the exact location of your enemy. This was very useful in Apex Legends as my footsteps constantly alerted me of incoming threats.

You will need to download Razer’s software and then enter the code provided in the box. This code is essential if you are buying second-hand.

You can then link it to your Razer account. However, this will not allow you to use the Kraken X with other computers.

The Razer Kraken X gaming headsets were also useful for music playback. Although the headset delivered clear vocals and music, it did not have the punch that rock songs require. You still get a highly capable headset for the price.

Microphone

Razer Kraken X uses a cardioid design, meaning it picks up sound from both the sides and front but not the back. The headset’s microphone ignores ambient noise, so your voice doesn’t get drowned out.

This was my test. I played loud music on my phone and recorded my voice using Audacity. My voice was clear and loud, while the background noise could only be heard in the distance.

Excellent quality recording; teammates had no problem hearing my ramblings. The microphone for gaming is the best feature of the Kraken X headset for the price.

The microphone’s only problem is its inability to retract or detach. I found it distracting to have a microphone next to me when I used the headset to create Spotify playlists.

Performance of Music

The new Razer Kraken X’s obtrusive microphone makes it challenging to use it as a music headset. However, it can play music quite well, so it is not a problem. To test Razer Kraken X’s ability to handle different genres of music, I used Old Crow Medicine Show, Flogging Molly, The Rolling Stones, and G.F. Handel. It didn’t perform well.

While a strong focus on the treble can be great for gaming performance, it does not favor music. Vocals were clear enough, but the bass was nearly absent, especially in classical and punk music, where it is most needed.

The music felt a bit lifeless because of the unbalanced soundscape. Although the Razer Kraken X can work in a pinch, music does not sound distant or fuzzy like other similar headsets. However, it isn’t great.

Gaming Performance

The Razer Kraken X works with all gaming PCs, including the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile phones. All games sound great on any platform.

The Razer Kraken X was my primary tool for testing PC games such as Overwatch, StarCraft Remastered, World of Warcraft, and Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition.

The headset was excellent at voice work, such as in Baldur’s Gate’s character quips. It also excelled at music, such as StarCraft’s driving background beats.

This headset has a shallow bass. Overwatch’s directional sound was functional, but gunplay sometimes lost a little bit of its oomph.

The Razer Kraken X also delivered high-quality sound on mobile platforms, no matter if I was exploring Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition on Switch or the dungeons of Dragon Quest III III on Android.

Although the good sound quality isn’t as rich or as nuanced as a higher-end headset, the Razer Kraken X still stands up against the HyperX Cloud Singer ($50) as well as the Roccat Renga Boost (60).

Customer Feedbacks

Customer Feedbacks about Razer Kraken Gaming Headset

“I have owned many sets of headphones; the Razer Kraken X has just made me “Switch.” I am now ordering a few more sets for my family.

They sound excellent, and the build quality is second to none; I really like ear cups design other headsets. I have not been this happy with headphones for a long time.”

“Solid feel, extraordinarily well-built, and decent noise isolation. Weaknesses Leather may give you sweaty ears after some time. Fit is not exceptionally stable. Bass is not as present as I would have liked. The sound signature is slightly on the warm side but has good bass.

Treble is very flat in comparison to other dynamic drivers. The Comfort level is average, but the adjustable headband helps. These are excellent, well-built headphones that are ideal for a typical computer workstation.”
