First Impressions And Evaluation Of The Quality

First impressions

It was so solid that I immediately thought ” This one’s really solid!” I know you will, too. It also has the “new speaker box smell”, which is what always makes you happy when you get new car stereo subwoofer stuff.

It is made of 5/8″ medium density fiberboard (MDF), which is a popular material for speaker enclosures because it is cost-effective and has high density. High-powered subwoofers require a dense material to resist flexing in air and cone motion. This allows for the trapping of sound to produce the bass you love.

Rockford Fosgate uses a sealed enclosure, not a vented like many car-powered subwoofers. It is a good idea to keep that in mind when shopping.

It weighs in at just under 30 lbs (13.4kgs), but it isn’t light. This enclosure is “real”, and not a watered-down pipsqueak like other speaker enclosures I’ve seen.

It looks great and parts & assemblies fit together well. It appears that no sloppy or cheap-looking production methods were used. I am very curious about the connection and wire terminal section. This is one of the greatest advantages that the P300-10 and -12 subwoofers offer over other models on the market.

It measures approximately 15” in height x 19.8″ (w) and 11” in depth (d at the bottom). You’ll need to measure your vehicle to ensure you have enough space. It measures 13.3″ x 17.9″ x 8.8″. Although you should be able to fit it, I have found that even an inch can make a difference.

Audio inputs and power connections

Rockford Fosgate appears to have used some great engineering design in the connection plate, a square-shaped assembly located on the left side of the enclosure. (It’s facing the front of the speaker on the left).

It’s not just the great features, but the power connector is what really makes it stand out. Once you have disconnected the negative and positive wires, you can unplug the bass remote plug and audio input connector.

This is a big advantage over other similar products, which require you to unplug each wire separately every time you want to remove them.

This is great for when you have limited cargo space and need it to be removed temporarily. You might be going out of town for a while and need to remove it from your car so that thieves can steal it. This is a great feature for lease vehicle owners, who will likely need to take their vehicle out at some point.

Connecting audio sources

The P300-12 can be connected to speaker-level or aftermarket stereo systems using the provided harness that includes RCA jacks. For speaker-level inputs, you will need to cut the harness, attach the wiring using crimp connectors, or another method.

One thing I don’t like – I would prefer a simpler option, such as having the speaker-level inputs wired next to the RCA jacks for the buyer to connect to.

This would save you the hassle of cutting the wire and reattaching the wire later if the RCA connections are needed for system changes.

The built-in amp by turning on the switch

There are three ways to turn your amp on and off, unlike other products.

  • Auto-on using audio sensing
  • DC OFFSET – This feature requires only 6V to turn on
  • +12V remote with wire (standard way).

These are the best because an amplifier remote-on wire uses a +12V signal for control. When not in use, this prevents an amp from draining its battery. Some vehicles are more difficult to work with today, so an accessory-switched 12V wire may be difficult to find.

The P300-12 offers 2 fantastic ways to get around this! That is something I can really appreciate. The DC offset function is only applicable to high-level inputs. Both audio sensing and digital audio are possible.

Amp wiring connectivity

The removable connector slides easily in and out. It accepts 4 gauge wire. There are set screws that keep the wire from slipping. It’s very nice.

Audio controls

Gain is a function that adjusts the amplifier factor of the system depending on the strength of the input signal. When possible, the gain should be kept as low as possible.

Low-pass-only crossovers are easy to use. They can be adjusted from 50 to 200Hz with a 12dB/octave Butterworth filter cutoff. It is not possible to bypass it because the system is only designed for low bass response.

Bass sound waves are large and likely to be located at the rear of the speaker, so in many cases, the bass sounds slightly out-of-tune with the front speakers. This can be corrected by changing the phase switch 180 degrees to invert the speaker movement.

Protect/Power LED

Bi-color LEDs are used to indicate power-on, a green power-on condition, or to show red when there is a short circuit. The amp will automatically shut down in this case. This is a great feature that I love. It’s simple, but it works.

If the amp is having trouble, you will need to take out the subwoofer.

Remote Punch feature

Remote Punch is an add-on that makes it easy to use. It includes a long cable with a 3.5mm plug and a 3.5mm plug. This plugs into the connector panel of the subwoofer assembly. You can adjust the bass volume from the front of your car using it.

It’s a nice touch and the control is very easy to use. Although I don’t like the ovalish shape of the remote control, it’s not a major issue. It feels good and is a nice touch.

The owner’s manual

The excellent owner’s manual is one of my favorite and the best I have ever seen. Although it’s quite short, the manual contains detailed instructions, measurements, and thorough installation information. It’s a great tool, and it’s easy to use for people not very familiar with car audio systems.

10'' vs 12'' versions

Comparison of 10” and 12” versions

The P300-10 and P300-12 are very similar. This is a comparison:

Comparison of 10'' and 12'' versions

It won’t really matter which one you choose, but it will make a big difference. I recommend that you get the 12” if your car can accommodate it. The cone size is the only thing that can replace it. A larger subwoofer can move air more efficiently, producing a more powerful bass sound and volume. Sometimes it even has more impact.

Interestingly, there doesn’t seem like much of a difference in the costs between the models, depending on where they are purchased. But, I will refer to the P300-12 here, since that’s what I’m reviewing. If you shop smart, expect to pay around $200. You could spend $50 more elsewhere if you shop smart.

A note on Rockford Fosgate and the specifications

Rockford Fosgate offers industry-standard Consumer Electronics Association ratings for their speakers and amplifiers. This means that they are not exaggerated (or made up). You won’t find these numbers with other brands, but they are reliable and accurate.

Klippel is the speaker certification program Rockford Fosgate uses in order to produce some of the most high-quality subwoofers available. CEA-2006 was created to help consumers avoid misleading power ratings, which have plagued the industry over the past decades. These reliable methods of rating products are supported by a few industry leaders in car audio.

Installing the subwoofer enclosure inside your vehicle

You may already have some great ideas for where to locate the powered subwoofer. But, it is so versatile that it can be used in many different applications.

  • Car trunks
  • Jeep Wranglers and other sports vehicles are located in the rear.
  • Cars with restricted space, such as sports cars and 2-seat coupes (behind seats),
  • Rear fold-up rear seats for truck cabs and in the rear floorboard
  • Cargo spaces in SUVs

You really are only limited by your imagination, if you have the space.

You must mount or strap the subwoofer box in order to prevent it from sliding or falling. You can see why it was so heavy at close to 30 pounds.

You will need to buy a few more as the straps are not included as I would prefer. This is another minor issue I have. There are no straps to assist with the installation of the subwoofer.

Evaluation of the speaker grill

The speaker grill is made from a fine mesh metal and is securely fastened to the box. It looks great and doesn’t block sound. It’s hard to believe that some competitors have no grills or allow objects to touch the speaker cone, which I don’t get. It’s not an issue here and it’s a nice touch.

Conclusion

Rockford Fosgate is a company that is known for creating high-quality products that exceed expectations. With their P300-12 and P300-10 model amplifiers, they have managed to break all expectations and managed to create an affordable and powerful choice for those who want to improve their car audio system.
