HD 598 Open Back Headphones Design
The circumaural (over-ear design) headphones can be used at home. If you don’t like the brown and cream color scheme, it will not be an issue.
They have an all-black color scheme and silver accents around the large, oval open-back ear cups. The padding on the earcups is a suede-like material, which adds to the premium feel of the headphone. They also come with an ivory and brown color scheme that may be more appealing for some.
The retro design, with its velour pads and retro styling, is a great choice. It has two unique characteristics not found in most headphones today: it ends in a 1/4 inch connection, though a 3.5mm adapter can be used with smartphones and other devices with smaller headphone sockets. Also, it does not have a remote control or microphone.
It weighs just 9.5 ounces, but its mostly plastic construction makes it feel even lighter. We found the velvet ear cushions extremely comfortable, even over extended listening sessions.
These headphones provide exceptional comfort for long listening sessions. Sennheiser created the HD 598 headphones to allow you to get lost in your song and movies without any communication.
The HD 598 accurate-sounding headphones do not rely on digital tricks to create a feeling of space. Audio is delivered through recessed speakers and an open design. Audio bounces off surround sound reflectors for more excellent dispersion.
This lightweight headphone produces a sound field that sounds more like a room than drivers pressing against your head. The HD 598 is an open-back headphone which means that it projects some audio outside. If you listen to medium-to-high volumes, your sound will be heard by those around you.
Although you don’t get many accessories with the HD 598 open-back design, it’s not intended to be used anywhere. The absence of a protective pouch or carrying case is more understandable since the HD598 isn’t meant to travel.
It would be nice to have more than a single cable with a 3.5mm adapter in this price range. A package that includes multiple cables and a stand would be more valuable if it had headphones.
The Sennheiser HD598 over the ear headphone has a high build quality but weak joints. The metal frame is reinforced in the headband, making them strong enough to withstand some physical stress.
The swivel hinges are a bit soft and vulnerable to damage. The Hi Fi Man Sundara 2020 headphones are better-built headphones and will last longer.
Sennheiser HD 598 headphones are insanely comfortable. Large ear cups have soft padding that is covered in a suede-like material. The ear cups fit comfortably around most ears, and they don’t put too much pressure on the head like the Beyerdynamic DT 770. Although the ear cups are too big for some people, it is a minor drawback to an enjoyable listening experience.
Sennheiser HD598 is not made to be carried around. They are bulky, and the left earcup doesn’t fold flat to save space. They are also not compact enough to tuck into a smaller size.
Although they are smaller than the top-end models in the same series, they are still heavy and take up much space. It is also disappointing that they don’t come with a pouch or case.
The Sennheiser HD598 over-ear headphones are extremely comfortable and stable during casual listening sessions. They are not suitable for high-intensity sports, and they are not recommended for sporting activities. They can fall out of your ears when you run or jump.
Sennheiser HD 598 is not outstanding The headphones can’t isolate sound below 2KHz. This is common for open-back headphones. They perform poorly above 2KHz and fail to achieve greater than 10dB overall attenuation of the treble range. But, it can block ambient noise around you.
Performance and Sound Quality
The Sennheiser HD 598 audiophile headphones produce a powerful, sub-bass-rich track like Silent Shout by The Knife. It has a thumping low-frequency response that is matched with a nearly perfect representation of the high-mids and highs.
This sound is balanced, with deep lows and absolutely no distortion even at top volumes. This track, which features panned synth parts, is a great example of the open-back design’s sense of space. But trails with more area in their mixes allow the HD 598 open-back headphones to shine.
You can sense the space created by Bill Callahan’s Drover recording as soon as the drumsticks hit each other in the first seconds.
You can close your eyes to imagine the space these instruments were recorded in when the drumming and guitar strums kick in. Callahan’s baritone vocals have a richness to them that is balanced by perfect crispness in higher mids.
The orchestral tracks sound fantastic, as can be heard in the opening scene of John Adams’ The Gospel According To The Other Mary.
The soundstage is filled with the sound of the bowed strings bouncing and stabbing around, as well as the decay and attack. Lows are rich and full of life.
There is little deep bass response to make them sound more natural. Vocals and brass in the higher registers have a fabulous high-mid presence.
This allows things to display bright and precise while still being anchored by the low register instruments they use when they move their muscles.
It’s a stunning sound, no matter if you’re listening to Adams or Bernard Herrmann film scores. You’ll feel like you are in the room when your eyes close.
The Sennheiser HD 598 headphones aren’t the only pair with open and airy sounds. The Grado GS1000 is an excellent choice if you have a flexible budget.
Sennheiser’s Momentum, priced at the same price, has a similar sound signature but offers more mobility. The Shure SRH144 ($47.90 on Amazon) is a more budget-friendly pair of mobile-oriented headphones and has an open-back design, which helps create a good feeling of space.
