TCL Alto R1 Soundbar Reviews

Pros And Cons

PROS

  • A powerful, balanced sound
  • It is easy to set up.
  • Roku Wireless can be used to augment the sound system

CONS

  • Roku TV required
  • To use the speaker, the TV must be turned on

TCL was the leading company that Roku used to market its wireless audio platform. However, Roku Tv’s built-in speakers (the Roku TV Wireless subwoofer and the Roku TV Wireless Speakers) were the only products launched in the first few years. The $179.99 TCL Alto R1, TCL’s Roku TV soundbar, is finally available.

It can be connected quickly to any Roku TV, such as the TCL Alto 6 series and the Hisense R7G. Although it doesn’t support spatial audio or any other type of simulated surround sound for that matter, the audio quality is excellent for the price.

If you need deep rumble, you can pair it with a Roku wireless subwoofer. This is an excellent alternative to Roku’s speakers, especially if your goal is an all-in-one solution.

Just for Roku TVs

To clear up any confusion, the best Roku has two wired soundbars: the Streambar ($129.99) and the Streambar Pro ($179.99), including Roku media streaming capabilities.

These models don’t work with the wireless Roku TV platform and can be used with any TV model, this best soundbar is also for TCL Roku TV models. The TCL Alto R1 is the first Roku TV wireless soundbar.

The Alto R1 is a very plain-looking car. The TCL Alto R1’s small package design is made up of only flat rectangular panels and right-angle edges. The minimalist design is unaffected by any embellishments or curves.

The front is adorned with a matte black plastic chassis and a black grille cloth, while the indicator LED sits behind. The soundbar is small enough to fit under most Roku TVs. It measures 2.5×31.5×3.9 inches (HWD). On the back of the new sound bar is a connector for the power cable and a reset button.

Just for Roku TVs

If you have a Roku TV, setting up the TCL Alto R1 can be quick and easy. If you don’t own a Roku TV, the soundbar can’t be used. It won’t work seamlessly on Roku TVs that support Roku media streamers such as the Roku Streaming Stick 4K.

To use the soundbar with the correct TV, plug it in, turn on your TV and hold down the Home button for five seconds. Select Wireless Soundbar from the wi fi audio setup Tv’s menu. After connecting to the soundbar, the TV will install any firmware updates and pair the devices.

You can control the Dolby Atmos soundbar from your TV’s remote or menu soundbar system once it has connected to the TV. These changes are made through the soundbar, not the built-in TV speakers. This allows you to switch between Bass Boost or Bass Reduction sound modes.

It also allows for automatic volume adjustment and speech quality enhancement. The Roku TV’s sound menu can be used to pair Bluetooth audio devices and the sound bar and will enable you to play sound through them.

This is all very convenient. However, the sound bar cannot work on its own. To play any audio through the TCL Alto R1, you must turn on your TV and enable Bluetooth.

Stereo Power

TCL does not specify the drivers of the TCL Alto R1 soundbar, but it has two 30W drivers and two 25W drivers to produce stereo sound for 2.0 channels. The R1 can play Dolby Atmos audio but not Dolby Atmos sound.

The Roku Wireless can be used to augment the soundbar. TCL does not currently sell satellites or subwoofers that can be used with the soundbar.

To get a true sense of the TCL Alto R1’s performance, we tested it on its own. The speaker is small and can be pretty loud. You won’t have to increase the volume above 40% for most listening situations.

Although it can create a big sound field, the stereo design of the speaker keeps the audio centered around your TV. Even with Dolby Atmos audio, you don’t get the precise directional imaging you would with a Dolby Atmos-compatible or multi-channel-simulating soundbar, such as the best Sonos Beam.

Although it can reach low frequencies enough to sense that thunder is being produced, it does not have wall-vibrating ultra-low frequencies like a separate subwoofer.

Stereo Power

The Alto R1’s audio range is impressive, even without sub-bass frequencies. The Matrix voices sound full and clear, and the industrial soundtrack with its low sweeps, high stings, and creepy atmosphere comes across clearly. The stereo mix is limited, so subtle left-right pans are the best form of directional imaging.

Star Wars: Galaxy of Sounds is also presented by the TCL Alto R1 beautifully. The loud, forceful squeals and hums of lightsabers can be heard. Darth Vader’s breathing has enough low-end presence for it to surround sound sinister.

The crash of rubble also receives plenty of realistic texture. Although the speaker cannot shake walls, it can still fill a room with powerful sound.

My living room was filled with the bass track from The Knife’s Silent Shout. Although the TCL Alto R1 will not fool you into believing there is a subwoofer, the bass sounds great and strong.

The distortion began to appear after I increased the volume levels beyond 60%. If you are a fan of playing bass-heavy through your soundbar, be aware that it can cause problems.

Thanks to the driver’s strong response at high frequencies and solid resonance in lower frequencies, Yes’ “Roundabout'” opening acoustic guitarist plucks have plenty of string texture.

The track kicks in, and the bassline is solid, with a lot of punch, but could use more presence. The mix is dominated by the drums, guitar, and vocals.

The best Crystal Method’s Born Too Slow backbeat has enough power in the low-mids that it punches through the mix and gives the track a genuinely ominous appearance, even though the soundbar doesn’t drive any low-end rumble. The riffs and the screeching vocals are unmistakable, but the beat’s thump is enough to balance them.

Inexpensive and Hassle-Free…With the Right TV

The best TCL Alto R1 ($180) is an easy and powerful way to improve the great surround sound of your Roku TV ready. The TCL Alto R1 doesn’t come with surround sound capabilities. To stream music via Bluetooth to the soundbar, your TV must be on.

It’s still relatively inexpensive, provides surprisingly good audio quality even without a subwoofer, and integrates easily with your TV without optical audio cable or ports. This makes it an excellent alternative to Roku Wireless Speakers if you are looking for a simple solution.

The sound bar comes with a primary Roku remote control that controls power, play/pause/skip, and Bluetooth connection pairing mode. There are also three sound modes available (more in a second). There is also a wall mount kit which many sound bars charge extra for. This is an excellent addition.

This sound bar doesn’t have many settings or bells to bother about. You can plug it in and start playing music.

It was straightforward to set up the soundbar. Plug it in and connect the HDMI cable between the TV and the bar. Then click the subwoofer. As mine did, the Sub should pair with the soundbar by itself.

You can use the remote control of the TCL Roku TV to control the sound bar if you’re using it with one. It connects automatically, so you don’t have to do anything.

The entire setup process is quick and straightforward.

What are unique sound modes on Alto 6+?

TCL Alto 6+ features three sound modes that allow you to quickly adjust the sound of your home theater to various types of programming.

There are three modes: TV mode, Movie mode, and Music mode. TCL does not tell you what each mode is supposed to deliver, nor what it adjusts or does differently. There is no discernible difference between modes. Some presets will cause a shift to one end or the other, but this bar is all I hear.

Sound quality at TCL Alto 6+

This wireless soundbar has a good sound quality but is not exceptional. This sound bar is undoubtedly an entry-level option.

Overall, it is a little thin with a smaller soundstage. The Alto 6+ is good at amplifying the sound and improving the quality of the TV’s speakers.

Although voices sound better and seem more natural, some nuances to communicate are still missing. The soundstage is more minor and louder than the overall music, but it is clear that the music sound coming from the soundbar. It doesn’t feel like it is filling the room with sound.

Also, the bass is a little too soft. The bass is not loud enough to make the floor shake, and there’s a tiny thump.

The soundbar is not an additional dimension to your TV’s sound quality, but it can help you get better sound from your TV.

Voice assistant control with Alexa and TCL Alto 6+

This soundbar can be used to activate a digital assistant. Alexa was enabled to control my soundbar to control smart home and stream music using voice control. Alexa is convenient, but she sounds strangely hollow and tinny on the soundbar.

The screen doesn’t display any associated visuals, contrary to other bars or speakers, even though the soundbar and TCL 6-Series TV seem connected.

Overall review of TCL Alto 6+ soundbar

The TCL Alto soundbar and subwoofer combination is an excellent choice if you have a limited budget but still want superior sound quality than your flatscreen TV can provide. It is easy to set up and use, has many wall mounting and connecting options, and is simple to join.

I am not shaming this bar. It’s important to know what you get for your very affordable price. It does what it says, and it does a great job. The soundbar is simple and will get better sound quality from your TV.

Overall review of TCL Alto 6+ soundbarsubwoofer

Although the TCL Alto 6+ soundbar is an excellent entry-level option, it is not a great soundbar. However, those who want more bass, resonance, and depth will need to continue looking. It may feel like there aren’t enough features. However, if you need more power, bass, more settings, or more intricacies in your soundbar, you can find them, though at a higher price.

TCL Alto 6+ soundbars sell for $179CAD, including the subwoofer. However, they are also available with soundbars for only $109.
